I have just come up with a brilliant idea

May 28th, 2006 Posted in Advocacy, Commuting, Events, General Stuff, Links, People, Rants

I went on a nice ride today the Massbug Sustainability ride (details soon). And I was thinking how much I love our customers. Not specifically the people on the ride. Don't be embarrassed. But I do some good thinking when I'm riding or after I've been riding.

So my brilliant idea is

to create a new blog covering Sydney bike culture!

Now, that is what Dave and I have been trying to do already, but there is so much cool stuff going on and so many cool people involved, that everyone should know about . And I reckon it could be a great resource and could help the cause of bike culture in Sydney. NB this will not be a Cheeky Transport blog per se. It would be a stand alone thing. I'd like to try and make it as positive as possible. Have a look at these sites for an idea of what I'm thinking
http://bicyclekitchen.blogspot.com/
http://bikeportland.org/ i love the byline "To inform and insipre"

SO, basically, I might set it up and ask people to be contributors of cool stuff (news, events, stories, thoughts, cries for help, whatever) whenever they feel like it

Anyone got any ideas ? We need a name, something sydney centric. Remember this is for Sydney bike culture. Don't be shy

latest news "velosydney" has been set up, but i may change the name if we come up with something else. Keep them names coming!

Damn that's a good idea!

As for a name, how about that lovely Australian idiom ‘The Local Bike’?
Makes it sound like a suburban newspaper, but I admit it is not very Sydney-centric.

what about cyc-sydney (pronounced sike or sic…either way is great) so when you say it out loud you sound like you’re hip to be square

What you call the blog is far less important than what it says.
So, maybe it’s time for it say something?

Oh, harsh comment. But true. This has been complicated by my not having internet access at work for 2 weeks (thanks telstra). Still a few days off.

I’ve been wanting to use the name INTERSTITIAL for anything relating to bikes for a while now. Sure, it’s not Sydney centric. Sure, it doesn’t have “velo” or “bike” or “cycle” or “wheel” anywhere in there. But it’s what it means that’s important. Who cares about being obvious. INTERSTITIAL really rolls off the tongue. And if you don’t know what it means, it sort of adds to the intrigue. If it gets really big it could become INTERSTITIAL INTERNATIONAL – WOW, what a mouthful! “Aye-Aye” for short. I’m getting carried away, but you get my drift, what?

By the way, interstitial means something like “situated in between, or situated in a narrow space”, something like that (look it up). Cheers.
