We put a nice Surly Long Haul Trucker together for Jordan a little while ago. The Surly specced complete bikes are great value, but not everyone wants drop bars and bar-end shifters, so instead of a full custom build we swapped some components around to get the setup that Jordan was looking for. We’ve installed 1″ BBB Riser Handlebars, and Shimano MTB controls, Tubus racks front and rear and bright yellow Ortlieb Roller Classic panniers.
Tubus Logo rear rack has a double rail setup. It keeps the weight of the rear pannier as low as possible for stability, and keeps the top platform clear for extra luggage.
Upright riding position won’t set any records but it makes sense to be comfortable.
Alivio brake levers work great, Deore shifters have lost their round design but still good quality
Shimano a530 pedals are a big improvement on their predecessor the m324. lighter, better looking, better platform
Alivio v-brake calipers are awesome value at less than $30 a caliper
We change the front mech to be compatible with the Deore shifters which jordan needed on his riser bar setup
