Feb 22/23 Wollongong region
The ride is mostly on coastal bikepaths, but there are some onroad traffic sections and some hills.
We are overnighting in Shellharbour, and I’d advise to google accomodation soonish to get something locked in. The Caravan park does one night bookings for tents, but 2 night min for cabins. There are motels and b and bs .
There won’t be a support vehicle, but there are bailout points for you to catch a train if you are lagging. And obviously, it’s pretty easy to chuck your brompton in the back of a taxi.
We are going to try to get a tailwind!, so we might ride on saturday from thirroul to shellharbour, or from kiama to shellharbour, depending on the way the wind blows.
In any case, the best way will be to get the train from Central at 7:26am (also leaves bondi junction, redfern, wolli creek etc if that’s more convenient). check http://www.sydneytrains.info/timetables/timetables_by_line.htm#landingPoint
south coast timetables, and make sure you are looking at the weekend timetable, not weekday.
7:26 train from central platfrom 25 will get to
thirroul at 8:47 for a 9am start heading south.
kiama at 9:53 for 10am start heading north
If you want to stay at shellharbour friday night, and meet us saturday morning, there’s a train from shellharbour ( dunmore, over the hill from Shellharbour proper, maybe 30 mins easy ride), there’s a train that leaves
shellharbour dunmore 8:08am to get to thirroul at 8:55am for the 9am start or, if we have a southerly,
shellharbour dunmore 9:33am to get to kiama at 9:53 with everyone else coming down on the sydney train.
Saturday night we will meet at the Shellharbour Ocean Beach Hotel for drinks and early dinner.
Bring your toggs, there are plenty of places to swim on the way, and a great ocean pool at Shellharbour and Kiama and Thirroul for that matter.
Anything I’ve forgotten?
We’re combining a whole bunch of our favourite things – Brompton folding bikes, the Leisure Coast, you – our fantastic customers, and cycle touring, with a little jaunt at the end of February.
We’ll be riding around 70k’s all up over two days between two train-stations, with heaps of opportunities for swimming, exploring and hanging out. We’re not planning a bunch ride, but rather that everyone starts together, rides at their own pace, and meets up at the pub at end of the day. We’re planning to overnight at the Shellharbour Caravan Park, but if you’re not the tourist park type, there’s plenty of other accomodation options in the vicinity.
Depending on the prevailing winds, we’ll either ride North to South or South to North, between Kiama and Thirroul – (Google Map), with a jaunt out to Bass Point, so bring your snorkel.
We’re going to take advantage of the great network of separated cycleways in the Wollongong area, and overall the terrain is pretty flat, with a few easy hills. If we’re not on a cycle-way, we’ll be on very quiet low-traffic roads.
If you’ve bought a Brompton from us you’re very welcome to come along. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to RSVP.
