Fuji touring is a dream

Posted in in General Stuff, Links, New products, Touring on September 2nd, 2005 by schmadzie | 4 Comments

There is a great review of the Fuji Touring by Ian Connellan in the latest issue of Australian Cyclist magazine.

This makes me very happy because I have always thought they have a lovely ride. The chromo frame is specced up for all your rack and mudguards options and soaks up bumps really well. Perfect bike for touring, dayrides or commuting.

The 2005 model (as tested) is grey and the 2004 model is still available in British Racing Green.

The price is now $1500 and we can fit euro bars like on Kathryn's bike for about the same price, giving a much more upright riding position common on touring bikes in Northern europe.

Standard gearing is a roadbike triple up front (52/42/32), which is great for commuting and daytrips if you aren't carrying much. If you want to fit front lowrider racks and panniers and want to cruise up giant hills, then we can fit mtb cranks (42/32/22) or something in between (48/38/28).

If you want to ride around the world, it might be wise to get some handbuit wheels using the new DT touring rims (I can't stop raving about these) , XT hubs and Schwalbe Marathon tyres.

sunday ride 2 gorges

Posted in in General Stuff, Links on August 8th, 2005 by schmadzie | No Comments

ooh i had a lovely ride yesterday.

Caught the train to Hornsby and read the latest Bicycling magazine. There was a great article about two people who swapped touring gear for a 3 day trip. One minimalist was given a BOB trailer full of luxury items like a coffee plunger, full foam mattress, GPS, etc etc. The other former luxury tourer was given a bivy bag and some lightweight clothing and that's about it. Then they went off together and tried how the other half rode. Pretty funny

Anyway, my traintrip avoided all the crap traffic to Hornsby and I had a beautiful cruisy ride down to Berowra waters, over the ferry, up to Arcadia and then up thru Galson Gorge back to Hornsby. 2 hours .No cars, sun, lots of gears and some time to think was just what I needed. Even saw Ash on the train on the way back.

Check out Turramurra cyclery's club site for some really great ride guides here

Something that has been gnawing away at me since i heard the term is 'indirect incitement', it sounds like an awfully broad term that could well be abused to silence any support for opposition to the war on terrorism(or is there a new name for the war? which war? where? there seems to be a new war against some peace hating, democracy loathing people every time i hear or watch the news. What has happened?Did we forget about Iraq being bombed for over a decade, radioactive warheads being dropped on Iraqi civilians, what is the difference between this and the bombings in London? We are in a crazy situation. Crazy, aaaaagggggghhhhhh

phew!
Riding to work this morning through centennial park was appalling. I thought i would enjoy a lap before work rather than my usual shortcut. However, there is some construction to the footpath taking place which means the road is a little more narrow than usual. What car drivrs then seem to assume is they can take the cyclist/rollerblader lane as their's as well. Mind you some of those gargantuan four wheel drives need two lanes. One bloke drive right up behind me in the cycling lane, i enthusiastically directed him to his allocated space, he was most willing as he looked a bit unsure of the lane he was meant to be in.
Centennial Parklands need to do something about this, preferably no cars at all, ever. (But then, public space becomes restricted or people park their cars outside the park, realistically some signs might help all park users.

Scottish dave just left to get the train to brisbane, where he will begin his cycling journey south to melbourne www.daveinoz.com. Better do some work.

old stuff

The 10th anniversary critical mass ride went off. Moz should have photos available soon. A great turn out, maybe more than 150 cyclists paraded around the city streets before making our way to newtown to celebrate. The fam (paula and sol) accompanied adam, tiff, jo, jos and emma (riding solo on a tandem: bad boyfriend adrian).

We did not stay to party, the bubby had to get to bed. We did see a great tandem with a babyseat which was ridden very skillfully by a couple who looked like they were enjoying themselves. I hope to make critical mass a regular family/friend activity.

Race for Jase July 31 Penrose

was a huge success.$5000 raised for the cancer council, 95 riders on a sweet trail. Nice speech by Stevo to remember Jase by.

Photos are here

Davy's framebuiding adventure.

I have just begun my journey to framebuilding fame and am learning Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW or TIG) at tafe. I had wanted to learn ox-acetylene but it is no longer offered. I wanted to get some experience with welding and brazing before i shelled out more silly amounts to do the UBI lugged framebuilding course.

It is pretty cool to be learning how bicycle frames are put together, reading descriptions on the internet can not provide the practical experience of the assembling equipment, striking the arc and heating the metal. Welding Student

So, this week we actually did some welding. Pretty scary first up to be handling a 6000 degree arc dabbing your filler rod uncoordinatedly into the edge of the molten pool trying to avoid the tungsten tip lest you contaminate it. People who are good at this must have very steady hands. We also did some oxy-acetylene welding on Monday night which was fun. Basic stuff but it is all complicated to me so takes a while to get the hang of heating the base metal enough, applying flux to your filler rod, tapping filler rod onto metal and then heating up the metal so the filler flows all the way through between the two plates.

I am intending to focus on City bikes, Holland style bikes, and touring bikes whatever else i have the ability to create will be a bonus. I think custom framebuilding has largely been priced out of contention in the consumer's consideration of a new bike. I am refusing to believe that quality cannot be offered at a reasonable price. Maybe i will eat my words when i realise the cost of setting up a workshop, insurance and the return on hours worked doesn't stand up. However, i feel like i have to find out. Offering quality products to enable cycling as transport to a broad range of people appeals as a job description to me.

We have just received some new shimano dynamo hubs, (lighter and more efficient) well priced at $150 (hub only) and the schmidt's are going strong for the ultimate dynamo solution.

The new B and M LED supravision light from lumotec was recently installed and tested and absolutely blew the oval plus i had been using out of the water. This light is incredibly bright, when angled correctly it gave me a broad light with a great beam directly in front. They are pricey and at the moment require a bit of modification to use with dual pivot brakes but i was very impressed. They reach maximum brightness somewhere around 5km/h which is great when climbing. It is on my commuting bike so you can check it out at the shop.
