SAW Bike Tour. Five-Suburb Sydney Dérive.
The Situationist International drifted through the city randomly, deliberately disrupting normal patterns and ways of walking in and experiencing the city; organised spontaneity. ‘Dérivistes’ or ‘drifters’ as they came to be known, seek to experience bizarre encounters in unfamiliar places and left-over city spaces.
Taking on Orwells mantra “four wheels good, two wheels better” we will drift along the city’s formerly-industrial western waterfront before plucking out the most interesting and provocative architectural projects and hidden gems in nearby suburbs Ultimo, Chippendale, Redfern, Waterloo and Surry Hills.
Sticking to bike paths, back lanes and quiet streets, the route and conversation will be structured around a number of contemporary projects, contested sites and politically charged themes.
This is no touristic join-the-dots of familiar places. Its an exploration of a very different side of Sydney. An insiders tour with a two-wheeled architectural twist.
Bike Tour Details.
COST. $90 General/$80 Concession (you have your own bike). $120 General/$110 Concession (includes bike hire). Max 12 people per tour.
DURATION. 9.30am-2.30pm (includes half-hour coffee-break)
WHAT ELSE. The route is as safe and quiet as possible, a combination of bicycle paths, pavements, laneways and back streets. However, you will still need to be a reasonably confident cyclist. Gloves are a great idea if its cold, and a sun visor or beanie will fit under your helmet. Sunscreen is also a great idea (don’t forget the back of your neck and hands!). Rain coat provided in case of unexpected wet weather.
