Surly

Surly are an American company who design steel frames that are made in Taiwan. Cheeky Transport can build you a custom bike with your choice of components based on a Surly frame. Some frames are available pre-built as complete bikes with components chosen by Surly. Cheeky Transport has an immense amount experience with Surly bikes and frames.

All of Surly’s frames are 4130 CroMo steel. Steel has a lot of allure as frame material. Like Surly say, when was the last time you saw a spring made of aluminium? Most of the bikes that all of us ride every day are steel. As well as everything else, there’s the undeniable aesthetic factor. Aluminium alloy frames need big oval or rectangular-ish tubes to hold their strength. Steel frame tubing can be slender, elegant and beautiful. Read more at the Rivendell Bicycle Works site about how good steel is.

Models

Crosscheck – Comfortable, versatile, affordable and awesome. See our Crosscheck page for the complete lowdown.

Long Haul Trucker – Surly’s expedition touring frame. See our Long Haul Trucker page for the complete lowdown.

Steamroller (Complete Bike: $1550 (as pictured), Frame and Fork: $940) – The grand-daddy of the fixie scene, and still a classic. Built it as bling as you want, or just get on and ride. The great strengths of the Steamroller in comparison to every other ‘rearward-facing-horizontal-dropout’ piece of Taiwanese steel are its strength for one, and its tyre capacity for another – betcha can’t name another track frame with clearance for 38mm tyres.

1×1 (Frame and Fork: $1100) – A kickarse steel 26″ single speed MTB frame. Talk to Lee about running it off-road. They also make an immensely fun city fixie, and true innovators and visionaries run them with 700c wheels.

Karate Monkey (Frame and Fork: $1070) – Surly’s 29er. 29er? Think 700c meets singletrack -  a road diameter rim with a mountain bike width tyre means enhanced traction and more up and over off-road. Versatility is the key though. Horizontal tips with a derailleur hanger mean hub gears, single gear or derailleur gears. Adam’s touring bike is a Rohloff equipped K-Monkey, and we’ve built them with flat bar road bike gearing.

Big Dummy (Frame and Fork: $2155) – A cargo haulin’ long-tail frameset build to accomodate the Xtracycle Free Radical system. Urban utility cycling at its finest.

Pugsley (Frame and Fork: $1340) – If you find yourself needing to haul medium format camera equipment, camping gear, food and alot of water across the salt mud crust of Lake Eyre like our friend Murray, the only bike for the job is the Surly Pugsley.
